Tantric Sadhana Meditation on Medicine Buddha

(Long version)

Preparations

External preparations. At a suitable time, find an appropriate meditation place that is undisturbed, harmonious, and clean. It is beneficial to place an image of the Medicine Buddha on an altar with offerings such as water, nectar, flowers, rice, incense, gems, 'precious medicine pills,' etc.

Internal preparations. It is helpful to prepare for the meditation by first spending a moment mentally seeking balance, using breathing meditation and non-conceptually resting in bare awareness. Then visualize the Medicine Buddha in the space in front of you and maintain this mindset during the taking of refuge, the generation of the enlightenment thought, and the offering of gifts. The Buddha then comes to the crown of your head, after which he dissolves into subtle energy and light and is absorbed into your entire body and mind. Then continue the meditation with the 'visualization' phase.

Taking Refuge

...respectfully from the depths of my heart

I take refuge

in my dharma teachers

and in the excellent Guru

in the form of the Medicine Buddha,

Master of all healing arts...

with heartfelt respect I also take refuge

in the excellent Dharma teachings,

especially the tantric principles

and in the excellent assembly

with all medicine goddesses and bodhisattvas...

The Enlightenment Thought

...for the benefit of all beings and myself

I aspire to swiftly realize enlightenment...

and especially to be able to remedy

various diseases and harmonize all kinds of disturbances

I practice this meditation on the Medicine Buddha...

Mental Offerings

...Medicine Buddha, I offer You

the entire phenomenal world

with our earth, the sun, the moon, and all space...

in particular I offer You

harmonious natural spheres with enigmatic dwellings

containing dharma rooms with light, incense, and flowers,

jewel-adorned and beautiful bathrooms,

vessels with gleaming gems,

bowls with nectar of various kinds and medicinal plants,

pleasant sounds from cymbals and healing mantras,

the protective atmosphere of the forest

and nature's pure fragrances and self-evident light...

Visualization

...within me open

six lotus flowers that come from the same stem

after which sun and moon discs appear in their center...

on these manifests the Medicine Buddha united with his consort

surrounded by medicine goddesses from the five Buddha Families...

The Master and his consort in the center have an amethyst-colored luster

with golden-yellow radiation...

his right hand, with the gesture of giving,

holds a medicinal plant

and the left, with which he embraces his consort,

holds a bowl with nectar...

they are surrounded by five medicine goddesses

who all in a naturally respectful half-lotus position

hold a bowl with nectar in their left hand

and a medicinal plant in the right...

the goddess in the east before the Medicine Buddha is blue,

the goddess in the north to the left is green,

the goddess in the west behind him is red,

the goddess in the south is golden-yellow

and the fifth medicine goddess on his crown is white...

each manifestation has a clear gem-like radiance

and all together have a rainbow aura around them...

above them all is Vajradhara (Dorje Chang)

and the entire mandala is contained in heartfelt blue-diamond

spaciousness...

You who have perfected

all valuable qualities of a Buddha...

healing empathy in union with all aspects of wisdom

and all knowledge and methods of healing arts and psychotherapies...

who embody the understanding of the various Buddha Families...

I pray to you, may you protect all beings and me,

especially those of us living in this age

with so many sufferings...

may you cure my and others' prevailing diseases,

both physical and mental,

and prevent new ones from arising...

may we likewise be harmonized

and freed from all negative influences,

especially the Maras' disturbances of our dharma practice...

Recitation of the Medicine Buddha's Mantra

While reciting the mantra – 21 times or more - visualize that subtle healing amethyst light radiates from the Medicine Buddha with his consort and that green, yellow, blue, red, and white light radiates from the Medicine Goddesses, which flows through your entire body and psyche in a balancing way, whereby diseases, injuries, disturbances, and negative karmic consequences in our physical, verbal, and mental energy spheres are dispersed. The light radiates out through all pores of the body and healing nectar then flows from the Medicine Buddha's and goddesses' bowls, filling the entire heart and body. You are hereby healed to a kind-hearted and naturally dignified state with balanced health and harmonizing attitude.
